My tentative plans are to fly to Minnesota for the first week of Christmas break and travel in Mexico (possibly the Yucatan Peninsula) during the second week of that break. I’m also tentatively planning to travel around Central America (Belize, Guatemala and further, if possible) during the two week Easter Break.

If any of you would like to visit the state of Chiapas, it would work best for me if it could be planned during one of my long weekends. That way you could stay with me and I could show you around Tuxtla, the capital city where I live, during the week and during the long weekend we could travel somewhere in southern Mexico, like the Yucatan, Tabasco or Oaxaca – all beautiful regions with plenty to see and do.

There are a variety of things to see using reliable, deluxe busses in the state of Chiapas:
- San Cristobal de Las Casas is an hour east for $3 US = quaint, colonial town.
- Puerto Arista (near the city of Tonala) are 4 hours south for $9 US = quiet beach.
- Palenque is 6 hours east for $14 US = Mayan ruins and jungle.
- Laguna Miramar is 8 hours east for $18 US = ecotours, canoeing, sleeping in huts, macaws and monkeys!

Just outside of Chiapas, there’s much to see and do, as well:
- Oaxaca / Puerto Escondido are 10-12 hours west for $30 US = state capital with a colonial heart of narrow, straights streets, liberally sprinkled with lovely stone buildings, relaxed but stimulating, remote but cosmopolitan / surfer beach town
- Mexico City is 12 hours north for $63 US = cosmopolitan megalopolis with a variety of things to do and see

There are often extremely cheap flights from the US to the resort cities in Mexico. For example, Minneapolis to Cancun for $99 round-trip is being advertised on
http://www.travelzoo.com/ (taxes would probably double the price and you must book by the end of August 2006).

Flying within Mexico is expensive with regard to the distance traveled. A roundtrip flight from either Cancun or Mexico City to Tuxtla (1.5 hours) is $300 while busses are $125, but 17 hours and 12 hours respectively each way. It’s worth checking several options and destinations depending upon your preferences.

If seeing Tuxtla isn’t on your list of things to do, for much cheaper you could fly into another city in southern Mexico and I could try my best to meet you.
