Idioms

The other day I was explaining to my 6th grade Language Arts (ESL - native speakers of Thai and Chinese) students what an idiom is and I asked them to finish the following sentences. Some of them were quite humorous:

• People in glass houses shouldn't…go to the bathroom.
• It's better to be safe than...die.
• You can lead a horse to water but...you can’t lead me to jumping out of the window.

• You can lead a horse to water but..you must finish your homework first.
• Don't bite the hand that...hurts.
• No news is…boring.
• You can't teach an old dog...that is dead.
• Love all, trust…Hank.
• The pen is mightier than…the banana.
• Where there is smoke, there is…cancer.
• A penny saved is...stupid.
